Recap

Having pulled off a great comeback on Saturday to secure an opening day victory at North Leigh, Bristol Manor Farm were on the receiving end of a dramatic turnaround when Shortwood United came back from 3-0 down to escape from the Creek with a point.

Manor Farm almost snatched back all 3 points in the dying seconds of injury time when a thumping drive from substitute Jake Cox was finger-tipped against the bar by Shortwood ‘keeper Harry Pickering.

The opening quarter of the game was a tight affair with few clear-cut chances. Steve Kingdon headed onto the foot of the post for the home side and a great diving save by ‘Farm goalkeeper Ashley Clarke denied Levi Cox’s goal-bound strike for United. Pickering then kept out a similarly fierce shot from ‘Farm striker Dean Stamp, diverting the ball onto the post and seeing it bounce away to safety..

Manor Farm enjoyed a good spell of pressure during the half’s last ten minutes and took the lead with 38 minutes played. Dean Stamp carried the ball forward, continuing unchallenged before slipping in Jordan Metters through the left channel. The ‘Farm skipper kept his head before coolly driving the ball under the advancing Pickering and into the net.

The home side’s mounting pressure brought rewards two minutes from the interval when Jamie Turner reacted quickest from close range, bundling the ball in from a corner.

A comfortable two goal cushion at half time was quickly converted into an unassailable-looking lead six minutes into the second half when Stamp bought himself some valuable space in the penalty area and squeezed a hard shot low past the keeper at his near post from just inside the byline.

At 3-0 Farm were good value for their lead but in a crazy ten minutes either side of the hour mark Shortwood managed to gain parity with three decisive strikes. A break down the left was converted by a good low finish from Levi Cox and Ryan Meredith pounced on a chance at the far post following a corner – stabbing the ball home for 3-2.

Shortwood’s tails were up now and they drove forward with renewed belief. Farm were outnumbered on a break in the 66th minute and Levi Cox was on hand to score his second goal of the game, sweeping in at the far post to the obvious delight of his teammates.

A shell-shocked Farm came back strongly during the games latter stages and an almighty goalmouth scramble in the Shortwood penalty area on 81 minutes somehow stayed out of the net following a prolonged ping-pong session where the ball just would not go into the net. Pickering’s fingertip deflection onto the bar in the games dying moments ensured the visitors came away from this pulsating contest with their first point of the season. Following Salisbury’s 2-2 draw at home to Paulton Rovers, Farm still look good in third place for their four points.
